Album Name: Tom and Jill Antarctic Expedition Return to Albums
Album Date: Jun 15, 2009
Description: Tom Barland and his wife, Jill, toured the Antarctic Region by a 92 passenger National Geographic ship from February 7 through March 3, 2009. They visited places involved with Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated 1914 expedition, when he and his 27 men were trapped in sea ice and then on Elephant Island awaiting rescue for a total of 20 months. They also hiked the last four miles of Shackleton’s famous 26 mile climb over the South Georgia Mountains to a whaling station to secure a ship to rescue all his men.
